10 Chill Self-Care Sunday Ideas for When You’re Anxious and Stressed

(With help from creativity and our furry besties 🐾🎨)

We all have those days—when anxiety shows up uninvited and stress is bubbling just under the surface. That’s when a slow, intentional Self-Care Sunday can make all the difference.

As someone who’s passionate about mental health and creative living (and obsessed with my pets), I’ve found that blending calm activities, creative expression, and pet therapy is one of the best ways to reset. So here are 10 gentle ideas you can try the next time life feels a little too heavy.




1. Cuddle or Play With Your Pet

Whether it’s a soft purring cat or a goofy pup, animals have an incredible ability to soothe our nervous systems. Spend time just cuddling, brushing, or playing with your pet. Their energy is grounding and comforting—and honestly, they’re way better than most therapists.




2. Doodle or Paint Without Pressure

Forget the rules. This is art therapy, not an art class. Grab a sketchbook or whatever supplies you have on hand and let your emotions out on the page. Even 10 minutes of messy doodling can help clear anxious thoughts.




3. Sit Outside With a Pet and Warm Drink

Breathe in fresh air. Sip your favorite tea or coffee. Let your pet sniff, explore, or nap beside you. There’s something incredibly calming about slowing down together with nature as your background music.




4. Make a Calm Jar or Sensory Box

Craft your own “calm kit.” A glitter jar (just glue, glitter, and warm water in a sealed jar) can be mesmerizing when shaken. Or fill a small box with soft textures, calming scents (like lavender), or objects that bring you comfort. Bonus: this doubles as a grounding tool for anxious days.




5. Watch a Cozy Movie or Pet Show

When your mind is racing, soft distractions can help. Pick a cozy movie, animal documentary, or pet-themed show. Let yourself get lost in it with a blanket and your fur baby by your side.




6. Write a Letter to Your Future Self

Writing can be super therapeutic. Try penning a gentle, encouraging letter to your future self. Let them know it’s okay to struggle and that they’re not alone. You’ll be surprised how healing it feels—and how helpful it’ll be when you read it later.




7. Create Pet-Themed Art

One of my favorite things to do? Turn my pet into art. Sketch their little face, design a fun digital bandana, or even write a funny comic about their daily antics. This is a great way to combine love, laughter, and creativity—all things anxiety doesn’t stand a chance against.




8. Try a Meditation With Your Pet Nearby

You don’t have to meditate for an hour. Just a few minutes with your eyes closed, a soft playlist, and your pet curled up next to you can work wonders. Their presence reminds you that you’re safe and loved.




9. Do Some Coloring or Sticker Art

Adult coloring books, sticker-by-number art, or even digital collage apps offer a soothing rhythm. The repetitive motion helps quiet the mind, and the colors bring a sense of joy back into your space.




10. Have a Mini “Spa” Moment

Light a candle. Put on a face mask. Wrap yourself in a soft blanket. It doesn’t need to be fancy—just something that reminds you to slow down and treat yourself with care. You’ve earned this pause.
