(from someone who’s a people-pleasing, overthinking, messy perfectionist)

Anxiety doesn’t just show up on its own.
It latches onto certain traits—ones that often come from caring deeply, trying hard, and wanting to do the right thing.
I know this because I have them too.
I’m a people pleaser.
I get anxious saying no… and then anxious after I say no.
I overthink it until I feel physically sick.
I’m also what I call a “messy perfectionist.”
I want things a certain way… but my brain gets overwhelmed trying to get there.
And on top of that?
I’m my own worst critic. I make every decision so carefully… and still end up overthinking it after.
So if you see yourself in any of these, you’re not alone.
1. People-Pleasing
You want everyone to be happy… even if it costs you your own peace.
You say no → feel guilty
You say yes → feel overwhelmed
Either way, anxiety wins.
2. Overthinking Everything
You don’t just think—you analyze.
Every choice feels like it has a “right” and “wrong” outcome, so you:
go back and forth replay scenarios try to predict every possible reaction
And even after you decide?
Your brain keeps going.
3. Perfectionism (Even the “Messy” Kind)
Not all perfectionism looks put together.
Sometimes it looks like:
starting things but not finishing them avoiding things because they won’t be perfect feeling overwhelmed by your own expectations
You want things “just right”… but feel stuck getting there.
4. Being Your Own Worst Critic
This one hits deep.
No matter what you do, there’s a voice saying:
“That could’ve been better” “Why did you say it like that?” “You should’ve done more”
So even when you try, it never feels like enough.
5. Guilt After Setting Boundaries
You finally say no… and instead of relief, you feel panic.
“Did I upset them?” “Do they think I’m rude?” “Should I have just said yes?”
So your body stays in stress mode long after it’s over.
6. Need for Control
Anxiety hates uncertainty.
So you try to plan everything, prepare for everything…
But life doesn’t follow a script—and that’s where the stress builds.
7. High Sensitivity
You notice everything.
tone shifts small changes unspoken energy
You feel deeply—which is a strength—but it also means more input for your brain to process.
8. Low Self-Trust
Even when you do make a careful decision… you don’t fully trust it.
So you:
second-guess look for reassurance worry you chose wrong
It’s exhausting.
9. Avoidance
If something feels overwhelming, you avoid it.
But later, it turns into:
guilt pressure even more anxiety
10. Comparison Mindset
You look at others and feel like you’re falling behind.
“They’re doing better than me” “Why can’t I get it together?”
And now your anxiety has something new to focus on.
A Gentle Truth
If you’re like this—careful, self-aware, hard on yourself—you’re not doing anything wrong.
You’re just trying to:
make the right choices avoid hurting people keep things under control
Your brain is trying to protect you… it’s just doing it in a way that’s exhausting.
A Softer Reminder
You’re allowed to:
make a decision and not revisit it 20 times say no and let it be enough do something imperfectly and still be proud
You don’t have to earn peace by getting everything “right.”
Sometimes peace comes from letting things be… even when your brain wants to keep going.
