Why I Switched to the iPad Mini — and Turned It Into a Mini Sketchpad Powerhouse

Spread the love

For years I used Samsung devices and loved the flexibility of Android. My phone handled everyday tasks and some light creative work. But as I started focusing more on design, illustration, and running my online shop, I realized I wanted something that felt more like a portable sketchbook.

That’s what led me to try the iPad Mini.

What I discovered was that this small tablet could actually become a powerful creative workstation — something I can take anywhere while still having access to professional design tools.

But I didn’t stop at installing a few apps. I organized the iPad into a cozy creative hub that helps me design, run my business, find inspiration, and relax.

Why I Chose the iPad Mini

When people think about creative tablets, they often imagine large devices. But I didn’t want something huge.

I wanted something that felt like a digital notebook I could pull out anytime inspiration hits.

The iPad Mini checked all the boxes for me:

• Small and extremely portable
• Powerful enough for professional apps
• Perfect size for sketching
• Easy to carry anywhere

Instead of replacing my computer, it became my portable creative companion.

My Creative Apps

The real magic of the iPad Mini comes from the apps I use for creativity and design.

Sketching and Illustration

Most of my ideas begin in Procreate.

This is where I sketch concepts, experiment with brushes, and explore new ideas. It feels very natural — almost like drawing in a real sketchbook.

Photo Editing

For image editing I use Affinity Photo.

This allows me to adjust lighting, edit photos, and prepare images for designs or product listings directly on the iPad.

I also like using Picsart for quick creative edits, overlays, and fun visual effects. It’s great for experimenting with different styles or creating graphics for social media.

Graphic Design and Vector Work

For vector graphics and layout design I use Affinity Designer.

This app lets me create logos, graphics, and design elements that I can later use across my website, shop, and products.

Pattern Design and Templates

For quick designs, pattern creation, and templates I also use Canva.

It’s really useful for:

• Pattern design ideas
• Social media graphics
• Product mockups
• Simple layouts

Sometimes I’ll start a concept in Procreate or Affinity and then bring it into Canva to experiment with layouts or patterns.

Final Edits

Sometimes I also use Adobe Photoshop for finishing touches or file compatibility when working across different design tools.

Having these kinds of tools on such a small device still amazes me.

Turning My iPad Into a Cozy Creative Hub

One of my favorite things I did was organize my iPad into folders so everything has its own purpose.

Instead of a cluttered home screen, I created different folders for creating, inspiration, business, and relaxation.

Create Folder

My Create folder holds the apps I use for design work.

This includes:

• Procreate
• Affinity Photo
• Affinity Designer
• Canva
• Picsart
• Photoshop

Whenever I open this folder, it instantly puts me in creative mode.

Inspiration Folder

Creativity always needs inspiration.

My inspiration folder includes:

Pinterest for collecting ideas
ChatGPT for brainstorming and creative prompts

These apps help me discover new design ideas, color palettes, and concepts.

Business Folder

Since I run an online shop, I also wanted quick access to my store tools.

My business folder includes:

• My Printify dashboard
• My Wix dashboard
• My WordPress dashboard

Having these available on my iPad makes it easy to check orders, update products, or edit my website whenever I need to.

Relax Folder

Creativity also needs rest.

So I created a Relax folder with cozy apps that help me unwind.

This includes:

• Relaxing cozy games
• Coloring book apps
• Simple puzzle games

Sometimes stepping away from work for a few minutes actually helps me come back with better ideas.

Why the Small Size Actually Helps Creativity

One surprising thing about the iPad Mini is how much the smaller screen helps me focus.

Large screens can sometimes feel overwhelming. The Mini feels more like working inside a sketchbook.

Because it’s so portable, I’m more likely to:

• Sketch ideas anywhere
• Edit designs on the couch
• Save inspiration instantly
• Work on my shop when needed

Creativity becomes something I can do anytime, not just when sitting at a desk.

Final Thoughts

Switching to the iPad Mini wasn’t about replacing everything I used before. It was about creating a portable creative system that fits my workflow.

Now my iPad acts as:

• A sketchpad
• A design studio
• A business dashboard
• A place to relax and recharge

All in one small device.

And honestly, it has become one of my favorite tools for creativity.
