Be You, Always: How to Show Up Authentically as an Artist in Your Personal Brand

In a world full of filters, trends, and constant comparison, showing up as yourself is your superpower—especially as an artist. Your personal brand isn’t about mimicking what’s already out there. It’s about creating a space that reflects your truth, your story, and your unique creative voice.

Here are a few tips that have helped me (and that might help you too!) show up authentically as an artist while building a personal brand:

1. Know Your “Why” First

Before you build anything, ask yourself: Why do I create? What drives me?
Whether it’s healing, storytelling, sparking joy, or shedding light on mental health (like I do through Cheerful Comforts), your “why” gives your brand meaning beyond aesthetics. Let that be your compass.

2. Create Without Apologizing

Not everyone will get your art—and that’s okay. You’re not here to please everyone. Your art isn’t a product of perfection; it’s a reflection of your perspective, struggles, dreams, and quirks. Let yourself create what you feel deeply about, even if it’s not what’s trending.

3. Share the Behind-the-Scenes Stuff

Show the messy desk. The half-finished sketch. The rough draft. The days you didn’t feel like creating.
People connect with you—not just your polished work. Let them into your world. Let them see the human behind the brand.

4. Be Honest About the Journey

Whether you’re thriving or struggling, be real. Share your burnout, your mental health challenges, your wins, your doubts. Your audience doesn’t expect perfection—they crave connection. Vulnerability builds trust.

5. Use Your Voice, Not Just Your Visuals

Words matter just as much as your art. In captions, emails, blog posts—speak like you. Be raw, funny, weird, poetic, loud, soft—whatever you are. Don’t try to “sound” professional if it means losing your personality.

6. Ditch the Comparison Trap

It’s easy to get stuck thinking “I’m not as talented as them” or “My brand doesn’t look that polished.” But comparison kills creativity. Focus on your lane, your message, your community. There’s room for all of us.

7. Let Your Values Lead

If you believe in something—advocacy, kindness, animal rescue, mental health—say it. Your values should be woven into your work and content. That’s how you build a brand people believe in, not just follow.

8. Don’t Hide Behind the Art

Your art is amazing, but your story is what truly connects. Post that selfie. Talk on stories. Let your face, your voice, your personality show up regularly. Remember, personal brands work best when they feel… well, personal.

Final Thoughts:

Authenticity isn’t a marketing strategy. It’s a decision to stop pretending. To stop waiting until things are perfect. To stop shrinking yourself.
You’re enough. Just as you are.
So keep showing up. Loud, soft, messy, vibrant, uncertain—whatever it is.
Be you. Always.
